One Answer:

There is unlikely to be enough data to use applied techniques with econometrics on private equity. In terms of is it advisable, I wouldnt say its a bad choice. Econometrics fosters good numeracy skills and analytical skills, which are important for many jobs. Combined with a major in Finance could be a nice combo. In the end of the day, a major choice between either economics or econometrics will not be a deciding factor. If there are some other specifics, feel free to ask.

Generally most people who deal with private equity related jobs tend to have Finance majors. In fact a lot of the common strategies employed in the industry like Leveraged buyouts are done by Investment Banks. As such if you are trying to break into that industry usually they want you to have a Finance major with a D average with lots of curricular activities. But there are many other firms apart from investment banks that also participate in that industry like the Carlyle Group,KKR and Co L.P.,TPG capital, etc. But I feel this industry is bigger in the US and smaller over here.
